MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AND BY-LAW OASES.
Mr D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Among the drunk contingent was Lionel Walter Doreeu, * soldier who had an additional charge brought against him of assaulting William J. Jarvis. This man had apparently saved him from being run over by a motor-car. For the assault ne was fined 20s, in default three, days' imprisonment. Colvin McKinnon, a fireman who was absent without leave from the steamer Pakeha, was fined two days' pay. •* Minnie Bailey was charged with threatening behaviour in. Sydney street on Christmas Eve, causing a breach of the peace, also with making use of obscene language. The defendant, a married woman, pleaded guilty to making t use of objectionable language, but exI plained that it was used while she was protecting her daughter from a man named William Hayden. On the second charge she was fined 20s, in default three days 'imprisonment. Hayden was afterwards fined 20s for throwing a brick at Mrs Bailey. James Carroll, for removing shingle from Ohiro. beach without authority, was fined £2 and costs. Charged with breaches of prohibition orders by entering hotels, Allen McPhee was fined 20s; John McKinnon, 40s; and John .Redmond O'Donoghue 20s. For Sunday trading, Gertrude Aston, Elizabeth Bertinshaw, and Ada Jameson, shopkeepers, were each fined 5s and costs (7s). The following offences against city by-laws were dealt with as stated:— Owen Aitken, no tail light to motorcar, 5s and costs; Frank Davis, leaving a baker's cart without a chain on the wheel, ,5s and costs; Frederick James Dawson, riding a motor-bike without a light, 10s and costs; Henry Godfre/, leaving a motor-cycle in the street, 5s and costs ; Edward Lloyd, riding a motor-cycle without a light, 10s and costs; Robert Packer, driving a motor-car without a rear light, 'ss and costs; Mrs H. J. Turnbull, not having a light on the front of a motor-car, 10s and costs; Joseph Hamilton, driving a dray without a light, 10s and costs; Thomas S. Frogden, William H. Smith and W. Ashman, owners of wandering horses,'ss and costs; Alfred Bradley, two similar charges, 10s and costs; ! William Hedge and Henry Mitchell, each 20s and costs. For keeping shops open after hours the following fines were imposed: —C. F. Baudinet, 5s and costs; Mitchell and : Goodwin, 10s and costs.
