SAN FRANCISCO MAIL
MAITAI ARRIVES TO-NIGHT. A wireless message received last night from the captain of the Union Company-'s mail steamer Maitai stated that the 'vessel will arrive at Wellington about 10.30 o’clock to-night from San Francisco, via Papeete and Rarotonga. The message also stated that the vessel was meeting heavy southerly weather, which accounts for her delay. She left the Californian port on November 10th, and was originally due here this afternoon. The Maitai is bringing European and American mails, and when she left San Francisco she had on board about 70 passengers in all classes for New Zealand and Australia, and over 1000 tons of cargo for discharge at Wellington. Owing to her late arrival, she-will probably remain in the stream until to-morrow morning, when she will bo hoarded by the port health olliccr, and after being granted pratique will berth at the Queen’s wharf. In accordance with the new timetable just arranged for the San Francisco service, the Maitai will not proceed on to Sydney as has been the ea.-e hitherto. A number of her passengers will bo booked through to Sydney, but unless the Manuka’s departure from Wellington for that port is postponed, these will have to 'wait until the connecting steamer for Sydney nest week. , The Maitai will in all probability go to Lyttelt&avvto be dry-docked for cleaning and painting, returning to Wellington in tuna to sail on Thursday, December 9th, for San Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. As the service is to be maintained by two pu'tlree, the Mai-tai-,will be»;the iir-,t'Vessel to inaugurate the new time-table making WelJiiigfetm’f'th? tcrmnraFport.
