Heather Mixture must have shown. A decided improvement after his running at Auckland to win the Winter Hack Handicap at Hastings. In the Cornwall Handicap, at Ellerslio, ho met better cattle, but was never prominent at any part of the journey, with the exception that -he was well to the rear. The journey was a short one which probably accounted for Toki being unable to up at the finish of the race.
' With twenty-eight, for thr ‘Wellington. Steeplechase a good field is assured. Many would have liked to see El Gallo’s name amongst _ the nominations, but he has been nominated tor the Winter Hurdles’ and should he go to the post he will carry the largest measure 01 support.
Scots Guard is not a likely starter for the Wellington Steeplechase, Had he stayed in New Zealand h© would have carried a lot of money in the threat Northern Steeplechase, for which he would, no doubt, havo been a starter.
The June Steeplechase at the Hawke’s Bay meeting was robbed of all interest by the number of mishaps that took place. ' The favourite, Soporific, who won the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase ou the opening day of the meeting, is not a "baulker” as a rule, and.no doubt hie rider was unaware that Lcapuki, who was in front, had missed the hencoop, and was unable ‘to rectify Soporific in following the lead. Morning, who was the only horse to stand' up in the June Steeplechase at Hastings, is a Sylvia Park gelding. He is a six-year-old, and last season won the Trial Hurdles at -the C.J.C. Grand National meeting with ld.B, from Prince Eddie, Napper Tandy. Pip, Waitoto, and Combination, and also the New Zealand Grand National Hurdles at the same meting, when he carried 9.12, and beat Marion, The Native, North East, Coronets I and Flingot among others. By his success in the Hawke’s Bay b.eeplecha&e on Friday, Soporific will gain a larger measure of support than would’ ctaerwise be tho case in the Wellington Steeplechase, which takes place ne.it month.
