WOUNDED SOLDIERS
COMFORTS THE PUBLIC MAY PROVIDE. Press Association. DUNEDIN, Juno 21. The question of comforts for disabled soldiers in Egypt and the hospitals in England was mentioned by a reporter to the Hon. James Allen (Minister* for Defence). He said he desired to draw a clear distinction between ordinary hospital necessities and conveniences, and provisions for the sick and wounded, and what he would call special comforts—writing paper, shaving material, books, etc. Ho thought such comforts must be the sort of requirements to he supplied fay the generous public -of New Zealand. Money has been donated by the public to the Empire defence fund for the purpose of providing comforts for the sick, wounded, and convalescent - soldiers. "I have,” he added, ‘'already forwarded these sums, and more. When a telegram reached me asking for more, I immediately sent £IOOO. I have public money in hand now for the purpose of providing comforts for the sick and wouned. and I think" it would be wise if the Minister for Defence were kept supplied with a certain amount for this special purpose-” FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED. WANGANUI, Juno 21. A reply that has been received here by Lieutenant-Colonel Hughes in answer to inquiries cabled to Cairo does not bear out the reports received by the Governor and -the Hon., James Allen. The cable states:—“No funds available for wounded At Cairo, and financial assistance urgently wanted,” iSimilar intimation had previously been received, here from Chaplain Captain Blamires, on receipt of which £IOO iwas cabled .
