, Leo Stephen Curtis, who was sent back from the Egyptian front to answer six charges of stealing funds of the Ohakune Borough Council, was again brought up for sentence before, the Chief Justice yesterday. Sir John Findlay, K.C., and Mr D. R. Hoggard appeared for tne prisoner. It appeared that the military authorities were prepared to again accept the services of the prisoner if he were granted probation, but a question of medical fitness had arisen. His Honour decided to admit. the prisoner to probation for two years, on condition that moneys due to him should.be assigned to the Public Trustee after the deduction of the amount of his passage-money back to Alexandria. A provision of the probation would also be that be must join the military forces if found medically fit. ; His Honour explained that his leniency was dictated by the. fact of the prisoner having been incarcerated for some time, and that he had obtained a good record in Egypt.
