CHILDREN AND THE WAR

To the Editor, “N.Z. Times.” Sir, —The saddest feature of war ia the wholesale making of widows and orphans, and the gigantic struggle, now convulsing -Europe i will tax the resources of institutions for children to breaking point. An appeal at the present time on behalf of Dr Barnardo’s Homes may be regarded by a few as inopportune; the great majority, however. of New Zealanders will welcome an opportunity of ■ helping the little ones whoso fathers, at the call of duty, gave their lives for the-Empire. ' Patriotism has many aspects, and it would bo a reproach if ours ended with the hearing of a share in the naval and military burdens, and refused to assist the orphaned , children of our gallant sailors . and soldiers. The claims for admission to Dr Barnardo’s Homes will greatly increase in number and urgency. The funds, on the other, hand, are likely to show an alarming falling-off, unless the sacred duty of caring for the children ho pressed home on every possible' occasion. Dr Barnardo’s Homes are a national work, firmly established in public confidence. They already shelter over 8000 boys and girls (more than 1000 of whom are crippled, sick, or in some other way afflicted), and tor food alone £250 is needed, daily. Subscriptions and donations will he thankfully received by our hen. tresis surer for New Zealand,' P. Harper Cox., - Esq., Bank of Australasia, Christchurch, or by myself, at the address given below, and receipts, if desired, will bo sent from our London office for all sums of 2s 6d and over. With grateful thanks for the uso of your columns, —I am, etc., H. W. LEE,;. Organising Secretary for New Zealand. 9, Fitzroy road, Napier.

Tho executive of the New Zealand Education Institute has completed arrangements for collecting contributions for a joint donation from tho members of the institute to the Empire Defence Fund. ' “WHO CHOOSES MB SHALL GAIN a« much as he deserves." —Choose Kartell's and yon’ll have a raio treat in Brandies. That’s no more than you dej serve, is it?
