ROWING

WELLINGTON REGATTA. Present weather indications are that the northerly course will be used for tli© regatta to be held this afternoon. The committee meet early to-day to decide this matter, and a blue flag will be flown on the G.P.O. if the northerly course at Petone is to be employed, and a red flag will denote the southerly course. In the event of the latter the races will be rowed across Oriental Bay, the finish being judged from the Taranaki street wharf. “Follow-the-race” steamers leave the Ferry Wharf at 12.15 p.m., and will call at the Taranaki street wharf between races if the southerly course is used. The Wairau crews from Marlborough arrived late on ‘Thursday night, accompanied by a large party of supporters. Last Saturday this club retained its right to tho McCallum Cup by somewhat easily defeating, on the Wairau river, the Blenheim and Picton representatives. Their maiden four crew should give a good account of themselves to-day. The Wanganui men from the Aramoho, Wanganui Rowing, and. Wanganui Union Clubs were all expected last evening, and the Canterbury contingent arc arriving tbis morning. The Kawatiri (Westport) crew are also duo this morning from Canterbury, where they have been taking part in the annual territorial camp. Following is a list of the- races, together with starting times, and number of entries in each event: —Senior sculls (5 entries), 12.43 p.m.; maiden fours (10), 1.15 p.m.; senior fours (3), 1.45 p.m.; junior pairs (5), 2.15 p.m.; maiden pairs (5), 3 plm.; youths’ fours (5), 3.30 p.m.; senior double sculls (5), 4 p.m.-; junior fours (5), 4.30 p.m.; senior pairs (3), 5 p.m.; and maiden double sculls (9), 5.15 p.m. Although the entries are somewhat smaller than usual, it can safely be said that, almost without exception, tho best crew in New Zealand in its class is . contesting ©very event. In the senior races all the champions of the Dominion are competing, and the maiden race (10 crews) should not be missed by the public.
