BOWLING NOTES

For the first time in its history Potone -lias been successful in winning ilhe Pennants. The club possesses bowlers of a very good stamp, and the win did not conic as a surprise to members of teams who have played matches against tho suburbanites this season.

In the final against Newtown, MelImish (Potono) went down badly to Laughton (Newtown). The Newtown team had been practising drawing, by playing “diamond” games, and -the shots put up on Saturday took some beating. Fowler, who played No. 3 for Melhuish, could not get hk driving shots home, hut the “skip” is not a driver. Time after time the head was not altered, and the howls ro'and “kitty” were not displaced. Melhuish only scored in three or four heads, and was ultimately beaten by 23 points. The other games were of a more even nature. Petone led from the start, and although Newtown had a large margin of points in one rink, the aggregate score did not reach that of Petone throughout the games. The champion rink competition on Wednesday brought out some fine individual ‘ play. The green was excep-tionally-'keen, and the car© that a player required to take when- putting a howl away told on many before a game was completed. For consistency tho laurel must be given to Laur-enson, the Hataitai skip. No task was too great for the genial “Clean, ” and often he turned defeat into victory by a well-placed bowl.

Petone played a good game against Johnsonvill© in the first round, but failed to repeat the performance in the second against Hataitai. On the eighteenth head Petone were lying five, and provided the shots were not disturbed the scores would have been equalised. Laurenson, however, with his last bowl saved four shots. Again on the twentieth head Petone were lying six, and victory was within reach. Laurenson, playing with xolito bowls, played for a wick off a “winger.” missed, and the bowl, after completing a half-circle, rested on the second shot, and the-game was won. ; Dali, the Wellington skip, kept pace with Laurenson during the major portion of the game, Hataitai Nos. 1 and 2 did not play up to form, but Laurenson and Barnes made up for any deficiency. Darkness closed- in. before the game was finished, and a bicycle lamp was called into requisition in order that the players might see the road to “kitty.” As n bowling t-est the last few heads were-any-thing hut satisfactory to either team, and the game should have been stopped whan the sixteenth head was completed. In the final with Newtown, Warwick, lead for Newtown, was right off his game. Warwick is one of the best “leads” in, the Wellington centre ond much is expected of him. Laurenson and Barnes played good garnet throughout rile competition, and “Clem” excelled as a “skip,” Hataitai is practically a young club, and are to he heartily congratulated on their meritorious win. On, Wednesday the champion pairs are to he decided, , and as there is bound to be the cream of the bowling experts competing, close and exciting play may be looked for. -On the Hutt green to-day the local players meet .. Petone’s chosen in a series of games for -possession of the presidents’ cup. The donors of the trophy;, Mr Orton Stevens (Hutt) and Dr M. W. E-oss (Petone),Will skip rinks’ against each other. The contest has been, looked forward to,, and although Petone 1 has been successful in tho past, tho fixture is a most enjoyable one. ~ . Petone, . the holders of the Edwin feathers, are to meet a strong rink from Newtown- this afternoon, and in order to. retain the trophy will, have to play their best. ‘ -
