DUE TO CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, SAYS POLICE COMMIBIONER.

CALCUTTA, January 20. Strong remarks on the subject of terrorism were made to-day by the Com-, missioner of Police before a large gathering of police and spectators on the occasion of the distribution of money rewards to constables and others who aadsted in the capture of the alleged assassin of Sub-Inspector Ghose on January 19th. - The Commissioner said that this was the sixth murder in Calcutta alone of a public officer. After the murder, the Commissioner declared, the press stated that a criminal conspiracy amongst the better classes did not' exist in India. “It does exist,” ho asserted. ' The Governor of Bengal was present at the ceremony.

DACOITS ATTACK TEA PLANTER* CALCUTTA, January 26. A gang of dacoits attacked a Mr Higgins at a tea garden at Chittagong. Mr Higgins was seriously wounded, but managed to shoot one of the dacoiM dead. Mr Higgins, who is the fathcr-m-law* of Mr Hutchinson, Deputy Inspector-. General of Police, is badly cut about the head. He is a most prominent planter, owning several tea gardens, and also a large residence at Chittagong. A determined effort is to he made to crush the terrorists in Eastern Bengal. Two regular regiments are to be stationed at the headquarters of the districts to undertake the duties of, guarding the Treasury while the polica concentrate their efforts on the sup. pression of dacoity.
