(By “Finland.”) In the Omaranui Hack Hurdles Marble Head came to grief at the seccond fence and broke his neck, hut Hatana was always handy until half a mile from home, when he tired badly. Caher Davon put up a good performance considering it was his first time over fences, and but for a bad jump. l at the last fence might have defeated the winner, which was a long way back till half a mile from, home, where he Eut in a good run and'.won easily. Oka--11 was not ridden with the best of judgment and made up a lot of ground m a furlong, but he then collapsed. St. Fire and Ruffiana were never in the hunt and finished a furlong behind the winner.
In the Esk Hack Handicap Berg began quickly and soon established a good lead, but though Anguish closed up at the straight entrance he could not quite reach Berg. Hima run surprisingly well, and should catch the judge’s eye shortly.- Montana performed indifferently, and was never in the fighting line. Formulate was also a disappointment and finished a long way back. Ngarua was not well placed in the early stages, but finished well in fifth place. The Cup race proved somewhat of a disappointment, for Bronze was in front throughout and won very easily. Ladoga, Birkline, Byron and Passadena all met with interference, especially Byron and Ladoga. The latter was in a good position going out of the straight, but was badly knocked about at the back and nearly came down on his head. He was one of the last to enter the straight, and came with a great run, and must have won if the race, had been a furlong further. Sea Pink, as usual, sweated freely, and when the field was sent away soon tailed off and remained there till the home bend, when he put, in a good run and finished sixth. Moutoa Girl gave a lot of trouble at the start and was last to leave the mark. She was never afterwards dangermis. Passadena was lying second passing the stand, but was allowed to lose a good position and remained in the ruck throughout. Birkful showed up for a while but soon cried enough, and finished last. Fair Rosamond ran a good race and looked like being second half-way down the straight, but the journey was just a trifle too far. Martina ran badly and was one of the last to finish. Ringforni was made a very hot favourite for the Trial Stakes, but the start was a bad one, and he was last to move. When two furlongs had been covered he was fully a chain behind the leaders, but came very fast in the run home. He, however, could not quite catch Arlington and Tete-a-tete. Arlington was in front-with Tete-a-tete throughout, but the former got badly knocked about at the top of the straight and it was a fair j.erformance for him to get his head in front again. Hoy had every opportunity to score.
In the Welter Handicap Perceler and Tatimi were the first to find their feet. The former led into the straight with Settler, and the result appeared to rest with the pair, but Perceler suddenly stopped and finished fifth. Sir Daniel was in a good position throughout and romped home. Tatimi stopped to nothing. Trieze was not well placed in the early stages, but finished up his task well. The Summit looked to have a good, chance at the straight entrance, but was then done with, while Merriwa, San Pluie and Pair Average were never prominent. Tavistock, Husheen and La Favourita were prominent almost from the start in the Selling Stakes, and as was expected the race proved a good one between the three, heads separating them. Many thought “Mr Highdon’s” filly won. Blackall jumped out smartly, but is vgry green, and did not know what to do, so he soon lost a dozen lengths. He was one of the last to enter the straight, but put in a splendid run and finished fourth. He will no doubt do better later on. Shaki was never in the fighting line, but he is very erratic and may prove all right in the future. Old Dad tailed off throughout and never had a chance. The Redclyffie Welter proved the best of good things for the favourite, Kinbombi, which was always handy, and came away half-way down the running and won in good style. Banian hopped out smartly and led the field to the straight entrance, but had no chance with the winner. Hiwitapu ran a good race under the weight, but finished a good way behind the first two horses, French Rose began well, bnt soon lost her position, and looked hopelessly beaten two furlongs from home. She, however, finished well. Multlkoff ran prominently for a bit, but the rest performed indifferently. The Flying Handicap proved a good betting race, Blue Lake being a-
slightly better favourite than Makara. Ventura was neglected, paying a good dividend to win. She and Zeus were the first to find their feet, and raced together the whole way, the latter winning fairly comfortably. Makara got away pretty well, but never threatened danger. Labour Day soon tailed olf and*chased the field throughout. Our King, Adroit, Heather, Day Fly and The°Hague all ran badly, but Blue Lake was in a good -position from the barrier rise and looked like being bard to beat. At the top of the straight she appeared to tire. Bertrada did not move off too well, but ran creditably, and finished close up. Oliver, the rider of Kinbombi in the Redclyffc Welter, was severely censured for going out of his place at the barrier.
