JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. TRINITY CHURCH FAIL TO LIFT IT. Petone had no difficulty iu defending their title (to which they succeeded on Saturday week hy virtue of their victory over Hutt hy 5 rubbers to 1) as junior champions when Trinity Church happened along last Saturday, in pursuance of a challenge lodged some time ago when Brougham. 'Hill or Hutt were •in possession of the trophy. With the exception of the: second single all the, rubbers were) finely contested, and Trinity were un-1 lucky not to score another rubber or two. Matheson in particular was in. splendid form, and apart from fully, extending Austin in the singles, was 1 mainly responsible for Trinity’s only winning e-fibrt, the second double. Petone won by o rubbers to 1, 11 sets to 3, and 77 games to 59. Singles. A’ustin v. Matheson, 6 —5, 4—6, &— 3. Parkinson v. Jones, 6 —2, 6—l. A. G. Duncan v. Smith, 6—4, C—3-j Kirk v. ing 6 —l in the opening sot, failed to win, and it went to Petone on a finishing break of five games. The suburban pair then got away with a big lead in the second set, which, however. they just won on the post, Trinity failing at the crucial point after reaching 5 all by steady play. Newtown are challengers this afternoon. NEWTOWN LADIES LOSE THE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. After winning three of four singles against Brougham Hill (challengers) last Saturday, Newtown lost the junior championship by three games. Newtown failed to score a solitary game in the first doubles, though, curiously enough, in the singles the Brougham pair (Mesdamos J. A. B. Howe and Burton) wero defeated by Mrs Bell and Miss Jenkins respectively, the latter pair, however, losing the double love—seven. Scores: Singles. Mrs J. A. B. Howe v. Mrs Bell, 3—7; Miss I. Power are left to contest the final of the Hutt Club’s championship singles, at pres-ent-held by the former. Last Saturday in the semi-finals Jackson defeated Percy Brown 6—o, 3—6, 6—3, and Power defeated Eric Clere 6—3, .6—3. Touching upon the writer’s criticism last week of the selection of the Wellington representatives for the recent match against Canterbury at Christchurch. it is interesting to noto that Mrs Wagg was defeated by Miss O. Caverhill in the senior championship challenge match Petone v. .Hutt. Gir-ling-Butcher, who had undoubted claims for inclusion in the men’s team, .defeated Beere 6—l. 6—l, in the Brougham Hill v. Victoria College challenge fixture, and Beere was a Wellington representative four years ago, though it is true that he plays little these days and is sadly out of form. The ladies’ doubles is the first event to bo concluded. Last Saturday the final was clayed and resulted in a victory for Misses Archer and Davis, who defeated Earle and Goldie, I—6.1 —6. 6-3, 6-0. ? _ ' - .
