Colonel Seely, Secretary of State for War, in explaining the Array Estimates, said that the cost of living had increased in all directions. This applied to the armies of the world. He said that every army now had its aviation sendee, and it was calculated that each airman cost double what a cavalryman or an infantryman cost. He believed that the! cost of all armies was bound to increase.
Aircraft, he said, was the most expensive thing the army had to procure. . The War Minister of a great neighbouring Power had recently said to him: ‘ ‘ Beware of aviation 1 It eats up money.” , , Colonel Seely added that he believed Great Britain was now efficient in regard to her air-service, and she would not fall behind in competition in mastering the air. Mr Hamar Greenwood (L.), referring to the Army Estimates, denounced the sinister feminine influence in British regiments. He described how Australia had wiped out the social status idea in the army, and said that two of the best officers in the Australian training school were the sons of a policeman and a shoemaker. Such , men would have no chance at Sandhurst.
