RECORD 100 YARDS SWIM

TWO SECONDS OFF HARDWICK’S FIXE EFFORT XOT RECOGNISABLE. Under the auspices of the Citizens’ Carnival executive an attractive swimming gala was held at To Aro baths last evening by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association. A substantial programme had been arranged, with numerous entries in the various events, which included 50yds, 100yds, and 220yds handicaps, diving, a relay race, juvenile contests.; and a comic interlude. The dominant attraction was the appearance of Harold Haoiwick, the Australian crack, who ha* held many championships. Under tiro circumstances one might have expected a larger attendance titan the four or five hundred who formed the gathering. The water was calm, and the weather conditions were favourable, except that a chilly easterly zephyr was blowing. Hardwick provided a striking exhibition of his prowess. He took part in the 100yds invitation handicap and the 220yds handicap, and won both .events with great distinction. In the former race he competed with three others, and finished in 58 2-osec, a time that would have established a record for New. Zealand had the dive been three feet above the water-mark. As it was he clipped two seconds off the record put up by Solomon last year. The Australian has a remarkable style, lunging out with powerful arm strokes and getting in a peculiar leg kick, in which the limb is lifted out of the water to such an extent that a distinct “thwack” is heard when it descends. He caught. Ford-ham some fifteen yards from home in the 100yds race, and won by about three lengths. The '‘two-twenty” provided another interesting exhibition. There were ten starters, and Hardwick conceded the limit man Slsec, while a handicap of 15sec separated him from his nearest opponent. Fairly ploughing through the water, he had the race well in hand when half the distance had been traversed, and at about 175 yards he was in the lead. The win was by a margin of between three and four lengths, find- was accomplished in 2min 34 4-ssecV The • general ©vents were followed with unabated interest, and the function concluded with an entertaining exhibition of water polo.
