From Our Own Correspondent. March 11. The members of the JMasterton Bowling Club tendered a farewell so cial last evening to Mr J. S. Rankin, rabbit inspector of Masterton, win. has been transferred to Paimorstoi. isorth, and who is a prominent member of the club. In presenting Mi jltankin with a travelling bag from the members as a slight token of esteem ■ Ith© president (Mr P. Gordon) referred 'to'the greal loss /the club would sustain through Mr Rankin’s departure. Mr Rankin was not only on© of the best bowlers in the club, but he wat a'so a thorough sport and an excellent' companion. In his official capacity, Mr Rankin was a capable and tactful officer whom the district could illafford to lose. Mr Rankiu, in spitnbly acknowledging the presentation, said he would always retain pleasanl memories of his stay in Masterton and the excellent friends he had found ir. the Masterton Bonding Club. During the evening, musical items were rendered by Messrs AA r . S. Jago, H. C. Roberts, 11. Ball, F. J. liunn and W. Igguldon. The AVairarapa Presbytery yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with JMts Thompson, widow of the Itey. A. Thompson, of Petone, ana formerly of AA’airarapa, who died last •week. A welcome social was last night tendered to Mr Taylor, the. newly-ap-pointed choirmaster and organist at Knox Church, Masterton, by the congregation of the church. Musical items were contributed by Misses H. McGregor and J. McGregor, Mrs Leslie, and Mr Gordon Stewart, and recitations by Misses Logan and Masters, D. Wood and R. McMas'ter. The Rev. L. Thompson, of Carterton, has been appointed Moderator of the AVairarapa Presbytery for the ensuing year. Mr and Mrs A. J. Patchett, of Alfredtou, will leave to-day on a month’s holiday trip through the South Island. Mr and Mrs Paget, of Takapuna, Hawke’s Bay, who have been visiting friends in Masterton and Carterton,-re-turned home yesterday. The AVairarapa Caledonian Society is making arrangements for a visit to Masterton of the Scotch comedian, Harry Lauder. It is probable that a pipe band contest wifi be held in connection with the AVairarapa Caledonian sports next year. It is thought that about ten hands would compete in sucb a contest. Dr D. G. Johnston, of Carterton, has purchased Mr H. Ticehurst’s property of 200 acres at Nireaha. The death occurred at Pdhiatua or Mondav of Mr Steuben Lester, an old resident of the district, at the age of seventy-fin years. Mr Cecil Davidson, of Pahiatua, win is leaving shortly for England, was entertained at a’ social bv a number of friends on Monday night, and presented with a handsome travelling rug.
Sirs L. M. Maynard, lato of the Saunders Hoad School, has taken up an appointment in Auckland.
