ANOTHER BIG FIRE AT FOXTON

MANY BUSINESS PLACES DESTROYED

NO FIRE BRIGADE—NO WATER SUPPLY

A disastrous fire* broke out at Foxton at half-past 12 o’clock this morning, resulting in the destruction of several buildings in the principal business 'thoroughfare. The outbreak began just north of White’s Hotel. A brisk southerly wind prevailed, which saved tho hotel, driving tho llamcs northward. As tho town has no firo brigade and no water supply tho residents were unable to present any practical resistance to tho fire, which spread rapidly. Tho fallowing places were destroyed: Krnest Ball’s tobacconist shop and hair-dressing saloon. C. Simraonds’s cycle shop. C. Odder and Sons’ jewellery shop. Hart’s jewellery and book shop. 31. jMooro’s solicitor’s office.

Mrs Nyc’s stationery depot, Wanklyn’s fruit shop.

J. Wall’s bakery. As tho “Times” went to press nows oamo that G. H. Stiles’s drapery and clothing establishment had caught fire, and there was grave fear that the flames would next roach tho Presbyterian Church and further spread to several other buildings in tho locality.

Tho fire fiend has hit Foxton hard in tho last few years. Only a fortnight ago the Bank of New Zealand and adjoining buildings were burned, and a few weeks previously a dozen shops, a church, and 1 a residence wore destroyed. In 1905 tho bank block was turned right out, and about two years prior to that tho block that suffered this morning was swept.
