SHIP’S COOK DIES
NOT A WRECK FATALITY. Early in the afternoon of the da; when the vessel was stranded, J. Mer ritt, the ship’s cook, died suddenl; from natural causes. He was buried ii the cemetery close to' where his vesse lies on the beach. At the same timi the body of Captain Hood, a very ol< resident of the island, who died a da; or two before, was interred. There were altogether six deaths oi the island between tho time of th( stranding of the Himitangi and the de parture of tho Gertie for AVellington.
