A SMART RE-CAPTURE
• PRISONER ESCAPES FROM POUCH CELLS. , George Pearce was charged before Dr, A. McArthur. S.M.. in the Magistrate's C'urf, <m Saturday that (1) op Juno 3Cth, at Wellington. ho stole one phir of boots, valued at 4s, the property of Thomas O’Brien: (2) on June 30th he stole two alarm clocks, valued at 6s, the property of some person or persons unknown; (3) on June 30th ha assaulted Constable Gordon while in tho execution of his duty. The accused, who was arrested on Friday on the charges'of theft mentioned, escaped from the Manners street J’olice Station the same evening in a somewhat sensational manner. About 9,45 p.m. Constable Gordon went to the ceil in which Pearce was eon fined tor the purpose of giving him somt blankets. Upon opening tho door the con stabie alleges that Pearce ■ immediately rushed at him, and after knocking him down made his escape. The_ constable, who was rather badly hurt, was unable to give chase, but Pearce was pursued by Detcctiva Cassells and Constable Tate, who arrested him in a house in Victoria Place. On the application of Sub-Inspeetor Shee ban. accused was remanded till to-day Bali wits fixed at £lO. with one surety c £--a.
