STATE FIRE INSURANCE
SUCCESS OF HIE NEW ZEALAND SCHEME. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, April 21. The Assistant Minister to the Treasury, Mr Carmichael, in a speech advocating a State fire insurance scheme, declared that New Zealand’s, State insurance, taken from the point of view of the general, public and' insurers, ■was an emphatic success. The New Zealand department may not have had much to distribute in the way of profits, hut one effect of the scheme had been a‘ reduction of premiums by the whole 'of the private companies. “One can hardly call an institution which saves the’general public nearly , a quarter of a million per annum- a failure from the point of view of the general public,” concluded Mr Carmichael. ,
