The by-election for the Haddingtonshire seat in tho House of Commons, rendered vacant by the elevation, to the peerage of Mr Haldane, Secretary of Stato for War, has resulted in the return of Mr J. D. Hope, Liberal, tho figures being: Mr J. D. Hope' (Liberal) ... 3652 Mr B. H. Clyth (Unionist) 3154 Liberal majority 468 At tho December election Hr Haldano defeated Mr Blyth by 687 votes—3B4s to 3158. Mr John Deans Hope, a chartered accountant and stockbroker, lost the "West Fife Boat in December, to a Labour candidate, after holding: It for over nine years. Mr Haldane represented Haddingtonshire for twenty-five years. EAST CORK PETITION. BANDS, FREE DRINKS, MEALS, AND RIDES. (Received April 21, 11.35 p.m.) LONDON, April 21. In connection with tho hearing of tho East Cork election petition against the return of Captain Donelan (Nationalist), a large body of police was drafted into the city for duty at the court. Mr Tim Healy, for tho petitioners, said tho election was won hy means of eleven bands, ten torchlights, COO free railway tickets, 2000 free drinks, and 284 meals.
