LABOUR DEPARTMENT

PROMOTIONS AT HEAD OFFICE. Consequent on the retirement of Mr E. Tregear, Secretary of Labour and Registrar of Industrial Unions, Cabinet has decided on. the following appointments:— Mr John Lomas (at present chief inspector of factories and deputy registrar ot industrial unions) to bo secretary for labour, registrar of industrial unions and chief inspector of factories. Mr Lomas has served twenty years in the Department of Labour, having joined a few days after its inception. He became inspector of factories in Christchurch in 1893, Dunedin in 1905, deputy chief inspector of factories in 1907, and chief inspector of factories in 1907. Air F. W. Rowley (at present deputy chief inspector of factories) to bo chief clerk, deputy registrar of .industrial unions and deputy chief inspector of factories. Mr Rowley joined the department in 1893 as cadet; became accountant in 19CG, and deputy chief inspector in 1907.
