LIFE-SAVING EXAMINATIONS
CHRISTCHURCH LADY'S DISTINCTION.
PEESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, November 22. Tho, visit of Mr W. Henry, secretary of the Life-saving Society, has created great enthusiasm in swimming . circles. A centre of tho society has been formed in Christchurch, with Air K. Bassett as chairman, and Mr Walter Johnson as secretary. In examinations conducted by Mr Henry, G. E. Billson and Miss B. Poulter gained awards for merit, the latter being the first lady to gain this distinction in New Zealand. Billson was awarded a diploma of the Royal Lifesaving Society, the highest award granted by tho society, which ’has only once before been won outside the United Kingdom. He was a pupil of J. A. Jarvis, tho swimming champion, and formerly a member of the Christchurch police force. He gained 70 per ceiit. in the theory examination and 84 per,cent, in the practical examination.
