CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

TENDERS TO BE CALLED. Amended plans and draft specifications for the Children's Hospital were laid upon the table at yesterday’s meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and on the recommendation ot the special committee which considered them they were finally adopted. They will be placed before the InspectorGeneral of Hospitals (Dr Valintiue) immediately for his formal approval., and tenders will bo called for the erection ot the building at once. It was explained that very slight alterations had been made to the plans since the last meeting of the board. The front entrance had been improved upon and made central. r There was a desultory discussion In regard to some minor details, one member suggesting that the plans should be again referred back to the comnvttee. • Rev. H. Van. bluveren said Wellington. would be tlie laughing stock of tho whole Dominion if there was any further delay. Mr G. London said that by always taking the advice of professional men millions of money had been wasted in this country. It was argued that the professionals man had devoted his 'life to his particular calling and must know best, but members of local bodies had devoted their lives in acquiring a little commonsense, and if he personally differed with the architects, even in a small detail, ho was performing a public duty in drawing attention to the fact. If defects he had pointed out while a member of the board, and which had not been rectified, were found in years to come to really bo mistakes, he would not hsitate in calling the attention of the 'board to the matter, \ Rev. H. Van Stavoren; I hope you won't send your ghost. (Laughter). Mr Loudon : There is too much non** sens© about the Rev, Van Staveren,

Mr E.. C. Kirk sai dthe medical superintendent had informed him that it would be neces.sary to demolish. ■ tho present Children's Hospital and the fever ward, as the site was needful, for the. new building. Authority to carry out this work wan granted. 1
