AN AUSTRALASIAN RECORD. 0. ATKINSON'S GOOD PEHPORMANCE. SPECIAL TO THE "TIMES." CHRISTCHURCH, November 22. C. Atkinson last evening established a new record for Australasia for 100 yards, breaststroke, swimming the distance in 78 sec. The performance was made in the presence oT a large gathering of people, who attended the public reception to Mr W. Henry at the Municipal Tepid Baths. Atkinson was started by Mr Henry, and he was timed by the officials of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. He swam the first length of 33 l-3rd yards in 22isec, the second in 26sec, and the third in 29sec—a total of 78sec. The previous best performance was that of-JI. Snell who, at Sydney during last Summer, swam the distance in 79 3-ssec. Atkinson's performance was enthusiastically applauded.

Atkinson, who is about twenty years of age. broke the world’s 220 yards breast-stroke record at the New Zealand championships in February last. On that occasion he covered the distance in 3min 'lOsec. as against the record of 3min 14seo standing to the credit of P. Matson, of Western Australia. For some reason, however, this record did not receive official recognition. _ Atkinson, who is an Englishman by birth, has been resident in New Zealand about two years.
