THE ROTORUA'S TRIALS
rnOAI OUE SPECIAL COIIEESPONDENT. LONDON. October "• Trials were run on tho Firth of Clyde on AVcdnesday, of a new passenger steamer for (he New Zealand Slnppiito Company. She is named the Rotorua, and will be placed on the Australian service. The builders are Messrs’ William Denny and Brother*, of Dumbarton. Her machinery is a combination of turbine and reciprocating engines, and a speed ot lo.u knots was developed. The Rotorua, whicli is 48-lft long and has a tonnage oi- 11.000. 'will carry first, second, and third- clas-j passengers. She has insulated holds and will carry 105,000 carcases ot mutton. Some guests of tho builders , j oined the ship for her trials, the builders being represented by Mr Peter Denny, and the owners by Mr George Mill, a hew Zealander, The latter said that the shipping companies had done everything loi Now Zealand. Before they took up the frozen meat trade, New Zealand farmers had to sell their sheep at 2s fid per head and their butter at -P-d per pound. Now the prices were 20s and Is 2d respectively.
