A party of Masterton settlers and residents left on a visit to Australia yesterday. Among them were Messrs C, Darnell, J. Elliott, 0. Pregnill, J. Morris, and li. J. Dagg. Mr Allan Thomsen. Rhodes scholar, .a son of Mr G. M. Thomson M.P., who is one of the geologists of 'Captain i Scott's next Antarctic expedition, has been asked by Captain Scott to study for six months under Professor David, one of the geologists of Shackleton's expedition, and he. is now in Sydney for that purpose. Mr Edward Brown, son of Air Peter Brown, formerly stovedcro for the New Zealand Shipping Company, has just obtained Ids chief engineer’s certificate. This is an exceedingly creditable performance for a young man who only left Messrs Cable’s foundry in Wellington throe years ago. Ho is at present’second engineer on tho steamer Inveran. Mr Charles Schilaky, who will visit New Zealand to conduct tho next Trinity College (London) examinations m music (practical), will act in a similar capacity this year in Tasmania and Canada. Ho is a British subject, and received his musical education in London, Berlin, and Paris. IJis favourite/' instiumonts are tho violin and pianoforte. He is an accomplished linguist, being able to speak four languages. At a parade of the Dominion Scouts held on Thursday night Acting-Captain Dalrymple announaed his resignation of the command. Mr Francis TerrUj, a Marlborough pioneer, died at Blenheim on Wednesday, aged 73 years. He arrived in Nelson inf 1862 in the sailing vessel Magnum Bonum. After residing in Nelson for a time the gold rush set in on. the Wairau diggings, and Mr Terrill, together with several others, made his ■way thither over tho Maungatapu, cutting the first track from" Nelson (says the ’’‘Express”). This was about the time that the never-to-be-forgotten Maungatapu murder took place. Later on Mr Terrill engaged in farming pursuits at Sunnyside. Mr Thomas Blennerhassett is about to retire from the management of Messrs Hallenstein Bros., Ltd., Wanganui. Twenty-six years ago Mr Blennerhassett opened the New' Zealand Clothing Factory's business at Westport, and five years later was transferred to Wanganui, the management of which, for 21 years, has made him closely connected with the growth of the town. The company have granted' Mr Blennerhassett a pension, in Recognition of his long and faithful services. He will be succeeded by Mr T. F. Xhckett, at present manager In Hastings.
