A NEW PORT.
Mr W. .1. Botterill, an engineer of Norwich, is bringing forward a scheme for making Norwich into a port. At present Norwich is thirty-one miles from the se-a by the River Tare. His scheme, however, "would make the course of the canal which • he proposes twenty-two miles only, as, though he would use the river from Yarmouth to the Berncy Arms, he.would from that point cut a new waterway through the marshes to Norwich direct. He asserts that the engineering difficulties are very slight. The. bar at Gorleston can, he asserts, be easily dredged to a depth of 26ft,, and the cutting of a canal 120 ft. wide and 31ft. deep over the level marshes in a peatv soil would be comparatively slight. He suggests also building a wet dock of eight acres, with a dry dock,. on land near Whitlingham Station, whence a tunnel through the city about 2,500 yards long would connect with the Thorpe and City Stations and so provide access to the Midlands. Though he appears to have gone into the engineering aspect of the question, he does not. as yet, touch on the probable cost.
