LAWN TENNIS.

j [By "‘Glexoabry."] j B ROE GUAM HILL OHAYIPIONj SHIPS. 1 Good progress wao made last week, the ladies’ sv.ngl-ss ruid men’s doubles rea-ahing finality. If Hawkins defeats , ihe winner of the Hantor-H. A r . Howe ! match, the final of the men’s singles I will bo decided* tQFs . afternoon, other- | v. ijo Laishley will ha.vo to wait another week, ao in the possibility of Ha-wkins being defeated it wouid necessitate one ma.il playing three matclies in tho j afternoon, and that would be too big . r, task, even if tho light did not fail I oo early as it does now. i , MEN’S SINGLES. \ Third round—Lindsay v. J. A. 1L ' | Hov.-e, 7—5, C- —3; Hawkins v. Dawson, 6—2, 6 —o. Semi-final Laishley v. Lindsay, G—2, 6—o. LADIES’ SINGLES. Final—Mrs Goldie v. Miss Davis, 9—2. This was a. very good game, and much more even thon the score indicates. , MEN’S DOUBLES. Final—Hunter and H. V. Howe v. Hawkins and Laishley, 6—l, 6—B, 6—l. This result was somewhat uncKpcoted, though the way tho winners played in the first sot suggested they were having a real day out, and that two seta would see it through. An alteration in tactics caused by Hunter playing from tire base-line instead of ■ in at "the • net, where ho had been . very successful, accounted for the Joss of tho second sot, after a groat fight. The deciding set was oven enough, too, but Hunter iand Howe always appeared to hare tire upper hand and combined better than tno opposition. NEW ZEALAND’S CHAMPIONS. Canterbury animal championship meeting at Easter were decided on the Lin wood courts on Saturday last. In the Combined Championship Doubles, iviver and Miss Nicholson defeated rc;nn mid Miss Goodman, (5 —5, B—b, (J—s. Tho play throughout was of a high order, both cornbimations playmg up to thoir best i-erra; but the former pair’s win was really determined by the unfa Ring accuracy of Miss Nicholson. The iocors were tho previous holders of tho title. In tho final of the Men's Handicap Donnies (first grade) Iviver and Borrows (owe 80) dcfcvX-cd Goss and Goss iunr. (rec. 8-G 15) by 0 games to S. The Iz&zrs actually .led ‘M-0—love” in the deciding game, but Kivcr and BorHows managed to equalise the position and eventually win. GENERAL. W. Sheppard departed by the Maori on W rducuday night in -order to take up his residence in Christchurch, where lie lies secured a good situation. Ho had originally intended going to Svduey last February, but remained in hopes that suitable permanent emplcymcnt would turn up in Wellingvoir. However, prospects do not appear to be too bright locally, hence ho was cnl> too glad bo accept the offer from the southern city.. He thinks ho will settle down in' Christchurch, which, by tho way, is his native town, but hopes to be present in Wellington when tho Davis Cup contest is being decided in December. As ho is desirous of keeping iu practice himself during the winter he intends joining a club hard courts, probably Linwood. “Wes” was always deservedly popular and in his new sphere carries with him the weliwishes of all with whom ho was connected in local tennis circles.

C. E. Weir (Victoria College) 'has been spending a few' days in Christchurch. and later on may put in a couple of months in Australia.

“Volley,” of the “Canterbury Times,” takes “Huka’s” classification cf the leading New Zealand players which appeared in the “Evening Post” of tho 9bh inst. Tho following was tho order of merit given:—Wilding, Swanston, Cox s Peacock, Fisher, OLlivier, Blau*, Quill ami Brown. “Volley” is wondering where Goss and Jennings come in, and reckons they should take precedence of some of those mentioned. This writer would like to suggest a couple of players who belong to neither province—Canterbury or Wellington—(it seems to be a matter of that!) and they are Dickie and Wallace. They would have no pretensions* to selection in a Now Zealand representative team (first six men) with most of Huka’s nominees available,(but ‘‘Volley” must be sadly prejudiced if lie could urge the claims ecf Goss and Jennings to those of tho brilliant Taranaki pair.

As great minds differ on most subiocts iii the world it is only to be expected that some diversity of opinion exists as to the proper classification of the players referred to in the preceding paragraph. Leaving performances out of tho question (and they are like facts, dangerous things), the following is humbly put forward as tho writer’s guess: —Wilding, Swnnston, Cox, Peacock, Ollivior, Fisher, Blair, Dickie, Brown, Quill, Wallace, Goss and Jennings. Warnc Pearse has not been mentioned at all, hut he should come in between Wallace and Jennings. Tho unfinished event , (combined championship doubles) of the Hawke’s Hay Club’s tournament was completed at Hastings on, Saturday,, details being as follow: — . Semi-final—Tipping and Miss Barthwaito v.. Callender and Miss G. Hill, 0-3, 6-2. Pinal—Tipping and Miss Braithwaito v. Webber and Miss Baird, o—s. 6—4.

C. J. Tipping lias had a remarkably successful season, tor in addition to winning the three championships at the meeting just concluded, he has won the Hosting Club’s championship and takes the Mortensen Challenge Cup. He also won ■ tho championship singles at the same club’s open tournament at Christmas, when his opponent in the final was J. H. W. Sheppard (Wellington). J. C. Blair (hon. treasurer of the Wellington Provincial Lawn- Tennis Association) has been ke|it busy lately visiting various parts of tho Dominion on business connected with his firm. Ho only recently returned from Auckland and Hawke’s Bay, hut was soon “trekking” again, having gone south by the Maori last Monday night.
