WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16. CRIMINAL BUSINESS. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.-M.) A CHARGE OF FORGERY. William Patrick McDermott, alias Arthur Threlfc, appeared on remand to answer a charge of forging the name of H. J. Baker to a promissory note for £2 10s and of uttering same to William McLean, secretary of the Empire Loan and Distributing Company. Accused .asked for an adjournment until Wednesday. Bo would not bo able to secure counsel before then. The police offering no objection, the adjournment was granted. Chief-Detec-tive Broberg said that it was probable ■a number of other charges would be preferred on that day. Accused then asked that bail should be reduced. As .at present fixed it was prohibitive. Chief-Detective Broberg that in the event of accused being hailed out ho would have to be re-arrestod on other charges. His Worship said that it was evident bail at present was prohibitive. It would be reduced to £3O and two sureties of £ls each. - s MISCELLANEOUS OASES. ■ For stealing a coat from a secondhand shop Charles Hall, alias Leckie, ■alias Damson, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. .
For resisting a constable whilst in the execution of his duty Dan Buchanan was , fined 40s, in default Tour.tcon .days. For being drunk the same ‘offender was fined 20s, in default seven clays. ,
1 Peroival MoKernon Braithwaitc, who pleaded guilty to the theft of a cash box and contents (valued at £3 18s), the property of Carl,Larsen, was, on the application of ChieLDetedtivo Brdherg, remanded for sentence till the 18 th.
Jack Carter, butcher, and Elizabeth Buokmaster, described as a prostitute, pleaded guilty to a charge" of com-, witting a grossly indecent act in Tory place. Both offenders, eta-tod the police, were 'under the influence of drink at the time. Carter was fined £lO and Bud; master wiais sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. John Howard, convicted of stealing a gladstoue bag and contents, valued at £5, the property of a shipmate, was fined 40s, in~ default seven days. Ho was also' Ordered to ipay 38s 8d coats and to refund the 10s .advanced by the pawnbroker. Accused and the owner of the bag (both young men), had arrived in the Dominion by the Arawa. The property was restored to the owner.
Ralph B:rlcomlm, aged dxteen, wan charged with -attempting to. carnally know n little girl under twelve—to wit, throe years and eleven months. ‘Mr Jackson appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. Accused reserved 'his defence and was committed for trial. Bail r/a’a allow'd in £4O and two sureties of £2O each, or one of ‘£4o, accused’s father to find the main sum.
Henry Sims was ordered to pay 4s per week towards the maintenance of liis illegitimate child, also' costa, £7 13s. Mr !P. W. Jackson appeared for the complainant and Mr Wilson for the defendant. CITO JURISDICTION. (Before Mr W. R. Hasolden, S.M.) CLAIM FOR. COMMISSION. Further evidence was hoard in the caso of John Brodie and Co., hotelbrokers (Mr Young) v. 6. Hawkinis (Mr Treadwell), hotelkeeper, a claim of £75 as commission said to bo due on the Sale of defendant’s hotel ait Urenui. The defence was that the sale had been effected by a person other than plaintiff, and that Ithe sum of £SO bad been paid as commission to him. Plaintiff was not entitled to commission in addition. Judgment was reserved. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) CLAIM FOR WAGES. The hearing of the case - between Herbert Chester, poultry farm manager (Mr Maohell) and Walter J. Jorgenson, hotelkeeper (Mr McGrath) was resumed. It was alleged that dofend'arit had sold bis poultry farm and discharged plaintiff, without notice. Plaintiff claimed two week’s salary in arrears, one, week’s salary additional to February 15th, and another in lieu of notice—a total of £B. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £1 2s 2d with 7s costs. .
