« THE CHEISTCHITRCH CONFERENCE I REPORT. OF COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY. FEESB ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHUROH, January 28. At the Frozen Meat Conference to-day the committee appointed by the conference made the following recommendations : "That the freezing companies be requested to consider whether it is desirable to form a meat trade federation with a view to protecting the mutual ■lnterests of the companies and the producers, in ponneotion more especially with such matters as forms of bills of lading, policies of insurance, c.i.f. ond £ contracts, dischargo in London, . insurance and quality claims, pooling, grading, labour laws, and any other mutters of a similar nature which, might tend towards the improvement of trade. "That a permanent committee be set up by the conference to receive replies from the freezing companies, with reopeot to federation of the meat trado to confer with the freezing companies, and others interested on the. question before mentioned, and that it be an organisation foi the purpose of protecting the interests of producers, such committee tS take stops to ascertain if the producers of New Zealand a/re prepared to subscribe to a fund foT the necessary expenses. "That the committee considers the time is inopportune for the organisation t>f producers through whom frozen meat should be consigned and sold, seeing that fchere are several co-operativo cornpanics in existence and that the present facilities for disposing of the meat are sufficient. , , , "That the committee be recommended to consider the question of cool storage nocommodation in London for the usg of New Zealand exporters of meat. _ "That the committee has not sufficient information before it to give an opinion on the subject of cool storage in, London." REMUS AGREED TO. The report was agreed to, as also ivero the following remits : That a representative be appointed to represent New Zealand (producers 'ajt the Vienna Congress next September with a view of opening up continental markets. '. ' That the conference inquire into rates and conditions of insurance against damage. That freezing companies use stronger covers. NEGATIVED. A motion that steps should be taken to regulate shipments as far as possible from ISew Zealand to suit requirements and stocks held in London und afloat was negatived. ADDRESS BY TUB HON. T. MACKENZIE. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, addressed the conference, lie was received * with applause. Ho said no one who had watched the development of the industry could help feeling that those associated with it had done noble and excellent work. The conference had to consider the question of combination at this end, and of u butter system of handling produce a.t the other end. The question ci regulating shipments must also be considered.
