RIFLE-SHOOTING.

SERGT. F.H. JAMES.

lIAWKE'S BAY ASSOCIATION. CHAMPIONSHIP AVON! BY SEEGEANT JAMBS. SrEC] 11 TO THH " TIMES." HASTINGS, January 28. The Hawke's Day itiiio Association's meeting wos bright to a conclusion this evening. The weather was again exceaaivcly hot, and the wind tricky. At times it developed "uoikscrcw" propensities, and was voted a "fish-tall" by all those who failed to make good scores at the long ranges. The championship belt ttr.d gold medal, presented by Mr W. Lune, was won by Sergeant James, ni the Napier Guards, with an aggregate of 303. Sergeant Humphries, of Hastings, was second, with 201, and Sergeant Head, of Napier,, third, with 233. By win/ning the championship, Jaan<?3 has once again shown that he is no more "sprinter." He is undoubtedly ono ocf the most consistent rifle shots in Australasia. His splendid perforniciices recently at Sydney and Melbourne, token in conjunction with his phooting during the past few yearn, has stamped, James as a marksman put of the ordinary.

Shooting started with, the second stags (600 yd?) oi the Rannevirke Match. The, son was shining very brightly, and there was a left wind blowing, across the range, lie variation being from dead. in. to 10 degrees. The best score was made by Rifleman Balfour. (Taradale), who put pa 34, out of possible 35, while Rifleman, McLean (Marackakaho). seored 33. Hiflolnoii Nat Willoughby (Gladstone), registered 31, and this, added to the "possible" he obtained the .previous night at 500yds, gave him the match. Sergeant Head (Napier) was runner-up, one point behind. The next event was the Napier Match, 6even shots at 600 and 700yds. The top score at the shorter distance was 33, made by Sergeants Yates and James (Napier.), and Bifiemaii W. G. Franklin. (Weber). The 700yds range, as usual,, "found out" most of the competitors, and thoro was a general crack-up right alongthe firing line. An oocasional "bull" would be Been amongst a string of "maggies" and outers, interspersed with, the dreadjed ova] denoting a miss. Pri* rate G. Tong (Hastings) put on the highest score at the distance—32. The. majority of the scores were below 30. Sergear.it Yates plugged along very consistently, and his seven shots yielded 30, He won the match with 63 out of 70. Only one match now remained for ths championship aggregate, but it wai the most trying event of the meeting-, consist int' of seven shots at 800, 900 Brii 1000yds. At the first stage, i3Io -variation was from 5 degrees right to 7 left, an/I the conditions were practically the sam*
