BOXING
At Hastings on Thursday night a flove contest took place between G. )evitt and A. Lectio for the middle weight championship of New Zealand and a purse of .£45. Devitt won. The "Hawke's Bay Herald" says that Leckie got to business directly the gong -was sounded, and throughout the fight his object was obviously a knock-out. Deritt, however, was too good at smothering. The first three rounds were fairly even. The fourth was ding-dong, decidedly in Devitfs favour, but both men showed signs of distress. Very little fighting took place in the fifth round, but in the next both men livened up. Honours were about even in the next two rounds, but in the ninth round Devitt again become aggressive, and severely punished his man, who for the moment appeared dazed, but recovered very well. Honours were easy in the tenth round, and in the eleventh slightly in favour of Devitt. Both men fought well in the twelfth round. A few seconds after the gong had sounded I/eckie's tow«l was thrown in. which came rather u a «tirpri*«, and Devitt was declared th« winner. The dooi9ian was well receive.
