HARBOUR BOARD CRANES

fho Harbour Board recently . spent many thousands of pounds in, the' construction and equipment of the I new jetty known as "the King's Wharf." The wharf is provided with many cranes. They cost much money, and with a view to recouping the Board on its outlay the conditions wore such as to make it incumbent for the work of discharging cargo from vessels to be performed by these cranes only. There were protests, and eventually an arrangement was come to by which the cranes and the "ship's gear" were to work in concert. Now, as the result of experience, tho Board has been compelled to. "allow the companies to use their own gear without any conditions in regard to the use of .tho cranes." There must bo a. considerable loss over this business and it would bo instructive to know exactly what it amounts to. It will be seen from a letter written to the Board by the superintendent for tho Shaw, Savill Company that he has had a very unfortunate experience. Are we to understand that these cranes are also "legacies" and that ( we must wait until tho Panama Canal opens before thoir worth is really apparent?
