The Marine Department received advice that the Government training slrp Amokura put into Picton at 3 p.m. yesterday in order to send one of the boys (named CoJlans) to the hospital, as he is suffering from a nasal abscess. The vessel resumed her training cruise. in tho Marlborough Sounds at 5 p.m., and Commander Hooper reported that ho exported to arrive at AVellington on Monday next. The Shaw, Savill aiud Albion Company's steamer Karamea, now loading at Napier, proceeds thence to Gisborne and AVellington. The vessel is due here about Tuesday next for loading, and will afterwards call at. Lyttelton and Auckland, sailing from the last-mention-ed port for London. Mr G. H. Scales has been advised that the cargo steamer Clan Eraser sailed from Port Pirie (South Australia) yesterday morning for Dunedin to conimience Homeward loading. THE PAPANUI'S DAMAGES. > When the New Zealand Shinning Company's steamer Papanui, which recently struck a reef off the north of Tasrasniii, was placed in Duke's Dock. Melbourne, it was found that along both sides for a distance of about 250 ft, her plates had either been torn asunder or otherwise seriously injured. On "the port side the results "of the accident were especially serious. There were several gaiiinn holes, into on« of which a man could j

easily crawl. Through these apertures the false bottom, which, no doubt, saved the steamer from sinking, was exposed. Tho repairs:will be the largest ship-ping work yet undertaken in Australia, and will occupy at least two months, and employment will be found for'all the ship repairers available. It is. impossible to say what the cost will be, but it is safeto put it at between £20,000 and .£30,000. In all, 127 plates, averaging 20ft by 6ft, will have to be removed. About half of these have been completely destroyed, and must be "replaced by new ones.
