HEETEN-G OP THE CITY COUNCIL. The' City Council "held its first meeting of this present year last evening. Present —Tie Mayor (Dr A. K. Newman) and Councillors i'itzgerald, Hindmarsh, Cohen, Devine, Eallingar, Fletcher, Luke, Carroichae!, Trevor, Smith, McLaren, and Morjuli. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. The finance ana committee recommended : That the Wellington Harbour Board "be informed that the council canmot boo its way to alter its previous decision not to grout the water for the new King's wharf conveniences free of charge. That Mr- Thomas Ward's application for consent of the council to the subdivisional plan of roads on the Highland Park estate be agreed to subject to certain conditions. That the application of the Karori Borough Council for the supply of water from Karori reservoir and drainage connection to tho septic tank near the Kaiwarra stream for the Evelyn estate be not granted. That the Railway Department be given notico that it is proposed to increase tho charge for water by meter supplied to the various stations from 8d to 9d per 1000 gallons. That a.a offer bo made to Messrs Piko and Bale, the original holders of the land taken under the Public Works Act for street widening purposes in Willis street, to return the land after deducting 10ft for street widening- purposes. That the rate of pay for owners of hired drays bo reduced by Is per day (from 13s to 13s), owing to the price of horse feed being now normal. Tho report was adopted with the exception of the last clause, which was deleted on a motion by Councillor Fletcher, and on the casting vote of the Mayor. POWER AND TRAMWAYS REPORT. On tho recommendation of the power stations and tramways committee, it was agreed:— That the claim of tho Armorduct Company for .£23, being the cost of tho drums on which the wiro contracted to be supplied by them was wound, be not entertained, as the specification required that tho wire should be supplied on drums. That the committee bo authorised to accept a tender for the purchase of 200 electric hot point irons. That the penalty imposed on Messrs Crabtree and Sons for delay in supplying incandescent lighting brackets bo reduced from .£ls to £3. FERE BRIGADE AND STREET LIGHTING. It was agreed on the recommendation of tho by-laws, fire brigade, and street lighting committee:— That a lamp be erected at the corner j of Waipapa, Kainui, and Moana roads, Hataitai, at an estimated cost of ,£B, and that lamps be erected at Matad and Arawa roads. Hataitai, so as to be available before the winter, at an estimated cost of .£37. That tenders be called for the purchase of a fire brigade horse hoso reeL. That the request of the May-Otway fire alarm syndicate for the discontinuance of the fee of JS 2s per annum, charged for each connection to this fire alarm I system at the fire station, be not acceded to.
