AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. Tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic ' Association met last evening, Mr' W. F. Larkin presid- ■ ing. , Other members present were— Messrs Davis, J. H., Pollock, H. Henderson, AV. H. Pollock, Obaffey, 0. E. Bridge, and Thompson. Correspondence was received from G. A. Wheatley and J, L. Davis, of intimating that they would (be Unable, for various reasons, to undertake the proposed tour of the Dominion early this year. The latter , intimated that, if possible, he might be a competitor at tho championship meeting at- Auckland, or else at the next Australasian championship meeting to be held in New Zealand.

The Amateur Athletic Union of Australasia intimated" its endorsement of the reinstatement of T. W. Leslie, Wellington, as from January Ist, 1910.—Certificate of reinstatement to lie forwarded to the applicant. The secretary of the-’Oamaru Athletic Club intimated-that when it had disbanded there were no funds available wherewith to pay the subscription to the association.:—Action was deferred, it being reported that steps were being taken to resuscitate the club. The Auckland Centre intimated that the championship meeting would bo held at Auckland on February 26th. The Canterbury Centre notified that the Marathon race which it had been intended to,hold in connection 'with a gala at Brighton had been abandoned.

Several communications were received regarding proposed methods of providing for representation at future Olympic games. Invercargill Centre notified its disapproval of the:proposition to levy a special foe on club members; Auckland recommended that a levy of fid be made from each dub member towards such representation ; while Canterbury reported that it could not- see-its way to agree to the proposed levy, but had the matter under consideration.

The necessity for something definite being arrived at in respect to tho revision and printing of rules was brought up by Mr J. H. Pollock. After some discussion a committee consisting of, .'Messrs J. H. Pollock, Marryatt, Bridge, and Thompson was set" up to , thoroughly revise the rules at ias early a date as possible,

It was decided to vote in favour of the proposal of the Tasmanian Amateur Athletic Club that clause 1 of the Australasian Cross Country Championship Rules he so. altered and amended as to'allow of the distance, five or ten miles, being fixed by the association conducting the event. , An application from W. C. Woodger for reinstatement as an amateur was held over pending the expiration of three years from the time he last competed as a professional. An application from W. C. Mexted, of Feilding, forwarded through the AVelling(ton Centre, for reinstatement as an amateur was referred back' to tho centre for an explanation why it could not recommend . the reinstatement. Henry Gardiner (Cambridge) was reinstated as from the Ist of January last. The Otago Centro recommended the application of J. E. Falconer, of Oamaru, for reinstatement. This was agreed to. Alfred McDonald, of Stratford, is to bo reinstated providing be joins either of two dubs in tho district. " . ■

, On the recommendation of the Reinstatement Committee the following other reinstatements were agreed to: —K. W. Eglinton, Palmerston North ; L. J. Furrie, Wanganui; A. W. Hall, Palmerston, North. Affiliation was granted the Hutt Recreation Amateur Athletic Club with the Wellington Centre. Mr Daria moved that the present clause in the rules relating to the representation of dubs on centres (one delegate for each fifty members or fraction thereof) be deleted, provision to be made for each centre to decide on the basis of representation which will suit the best interests of local districts. After discussion it was _ decided to recommend the sub-committeo appointed to consider the rules to make provision therein that small districts may have larger representation on the centres if desirable.
