AMATEUR ROWING
MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. THE COMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. The council of tlxe New Zealand Amateur Rowing. Association /met /at the Stax shed last evening. Present—- . Messrs R. W. McVilly (in the chair), IV. Bridson, E. E. Hammond. G. Lachlan, J. E. Widdop, W. Coffey and A. D. Bayfield (lion. see.). ■■_•■■ The Canterbury Rowing Association wrote stating that a matter had cropped, up - at a meeting of the association '/with reference to the ptfogrammo of the . Otago regatta,. held at Port Chalmers on December 27th. Condition .nine stated:—“ln all races there must be four entries .or no race.” / Thb 'council's, ruling was asked, as to whether a, regatta committee Could include,'suoh a. condition .on its programme; also could a- condition he allowed on a programme as follows: “Four crews to' enter, or no second prize.” As'-, there_ seemed to : ho- a diff©rorice, /of opinion various associations on tho questions, the.fqo'uncil’s ruling was , sought/for future guidance.—//It .was decided to ask tho Otago Association for an explanation of condition 9. ■ The .secretary of the (Canterbury Association wrote to the offeob that in the definition of am amateur the rules of the N.Z.A.R.A. stated. that tile secretary of 1 a local association might,:receive a bonus - for services rendered “provided, 'sanle'ihas been approved of by the council.”. The -writer regretted -that he .had received ,a bonus of £5 5s without .obtaining, previously," the consent of, the council, but the omission was an oversight.— The council approved the grant, the hope being expressed that approval in tho future would first bo obtained from the • council.- 1 The apnlioation of the Mercer Rowing Club ‘for affilio.tion' with the association was granted. ■ . Tire Auckland Rowing Association reported that a member of the-North Shore Rowing Club had forfeited his amateur .status by competing, under an' assumed- name, in the - recent professional handicap at Foston. Hie club had been notified that the .man's name must be -removed from the membershiptell .—The action: ,pf,. the association Was ’approved. It was /.decided that no change could be made in regard to the matter of colours mentioned, by the Otago. Rowing Association. Messrs Widdop and /Hammond wore appointed to represent tho N.Z.A.R.A. at the championship ■-regatta to bp held next Monday at Picton.

New ■ Year’s ■ Day» it was decided to drraw tiho attention' of the Marlborough Association to rule 16 for championship regattas, which provides' that all championship events bo rowed on smooth water. , ThiU decision, was the outcome of a letter _from the WoUington Rowing .Association.
