FROM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENTS. MASTERTON AND DISTRICT. January 14. Mr Bert Buokeridge. of Martinborough, has been taken seriously ill with pleurisy and pneumonia, and has been removed to the Grey town Hospital. The trees in the orchards in various parts of tho Forty Mile Bush are bearing well and there should be a plentiful supply of fruit this, season. * Mr Frank Haughey will leave Masterton shortly to take up his rosidenco at Te Kuiti, in the King Country. Mr Haughey has always taken a keen interest in local matters and he will be much missed.
There are" now 361 suppliers to the New Zealand Farmers' Dairy Union, as compared with 262 last year. During the month of December the sum of .£10,909 16s 4d was paid out to suppliers for butter-fat. The largest cheque was received by 'Mr Archibald, of Pairkville, the amount being £74. Mr Archibald has a herd of thirty-eight cows. The price received for butter-fat was 10id per pound. The death occurred, yesterday of one of Manriceville's earliest settlers, Mrs M. Jensen. The deceased arrived in the Dominion in 1872, and after residing in Kopuaranga for a few months, removed to Mauriceville, where she had resided ever since. She was seventy-two years of age, and leaves a widower, and four children. The daughters are Mesdames A. Larsen, of Mauriceville, and Petersen, of Masterton, and the sons Messrs Walter Jensen, of Mauriceville, and William Jensen, of Mauriceville.
A Masterton resident is reported •■ to have discovered a:■ cheap but effective explosive suitable,for blasting and similar purposes. He contends that ho has produced a composition which has proved itself twice as powerful as. and less than a fourth the cost of, the best explosive on the market. He believes also rfiat his discovery will revolutionise the cartridge world, as the explosive will be suitable for gunnery purposes. A number of local.residents are interested in the invention and. consider it to be of such value that they are prepared to subscribe sufficient capital to allow of the preparation being manufactured in Masterton. •
Shortly after 11 o'clock last night a motor-carr accident occurred near the railway crossing at Opaki, several miles from Masterton. A party of seven Wellir.gtonians were returning to the Lower Hutt from the Pahiatua races in a car driven by Mr C. Savage, of Lower Hutt. The corner of the road near Mr "VVrightson's property-is a. rather difficult one to negotiate, and the driver applied the footbrakes, which smashed, one of the back tyres at tho same time bursting. The car capsized, the occnpante being thrown heavily to the ground. Mr J. Armstrong, of Lower Hutt. seriously.injured his back and was removed to the Masterton Hospital in a somewhat critical condition. Included among the occupants of the car were Messrs M. Ford, J "Waite and "W. Hughes, of Wellington.
