Miss N. Duffy, of Qhristohurch, who has been staying at the Arcadia, returned South by the Maori last evening.
The .engagement is announced of Miss Doris Ca.rg.iU, second daughter of Mrs Archie Cargill, Dunedin, to Mr T. Rhodes, son of Mrs and the late Mr T. Rhodes.
At the Presbyterian Church, Hokitika, on January 11th, Mr S.- T. Burton, of the New Zealand Survey Department, Otago,- was married to Miss Mabel Moore,' second daughter of Mrs Moore, of Fitzherbert street.
An inpromptu concert was held in the male ward of the Victoria. Hospital by the friends of Miss Broad, the matron, as a farewell to her. Miss Broad is leaving for England shortly. The Misses Meek, Greelish and Bichter, and Mr 'Oummings and Drs Foster and Simpson contributed items.
Yesterday Sir Joseph and Lady Ward paid a visit to the Wellington howling green, where they were received by the president, of the association (Colonel Collins) and Mrs Collins and entertained at afternoon tea, in the. club's pavilion, over which Mrs Mentiplay'(the wife of the president of the club) presided.
Writing from Vevey, Switzerland, to a friend in Wellington, Miss Annette B«itzel, who at ono time filled the position of French mistress at the Wanganui Girls' High School, relates that she has been giving lectures there ■on New Zealand and intended giving more. The lantern views with which the lectures were illustrated were .much admired by her audiences. The proceeds of one lecture amounted to £9. Miss Reitzel has commissioned the Tourist Department to supply her with fifty more slides.
