LIQUOR PROSECUTION

ANOTHER MASTEETON CASE. MOM CT/R OWN CORRESPONDENT. MASTERTON, January 14. W 7 illiam Eagle, licensee of the Tauoru Hotel, . was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day with having brought liquor into tho no-license area of Masterton without having properly labelled it. Accused pleaded not guilty. Sergeant; Miller stated.that on Decem.ber'3lst, at about 6.10 p.m., he saw accused coming in from Taueru. Eagle drove into ■ Pinhey's stables, and witness followed Mm and asked'if he ever -"brought.liquor in here." Accused replied:.that, he did sometimes, and'that he had a case in his trap. Witness 'nis'pected the 'case and' found that it was not labelled. Accused admitted that he had not labelled 'it, but said it was for. his own use, and that he was going to put it in his locker. He also said that he had not brought it 'from Taueru, ' but had taken . it from the waggoner, Witness took possession of it,, and that night accused, in company with Mr Pownall, came and tasked that the liquor be returned- or proceedings would be taken against him. as he had no warrant. Witness refused to (return the liquor, and accused stated it. had - not been brought, from outside the, no-license area-. In the course of his evidence. William Eagle said he had run' out of case whisky at the.hotel, 1 and asked the waggoner to see if there, was any at the railway station , for. h'ni. and if so to bring it. out.. Accused .was coming into Masterton and met the waggoner inside the no-liconse- district. He. asked him if he had any liquor for him, to which the waggoner replied that he had about ten cases.. Accused stated he wanted a bottle for his locker, and would "'take a' case with him and;bring the (remainder homo in the morning. He liad not tried to evade Sergeant Miller in any way. After hearing, further evidence the: Magistrate dismissed the case.
