The old Raugatira, which used 1 to fly the ShtrW, Savill house flag (says the "Daily Telegraph”), is. now under the Russian flag. , It will be:remembered that the steamship Rangatira was purchased early last year by- the Union Cold Storage Company, and left London in April for a new venture in. the rivers of Northern Siberia. After;leaving the Thames s]ie proceeded direct to Vladivostock, and there took in. extra boats, and engaged a .crew’ of fishermen and labourers, consisting of, Russians, Japanese, andirKoreans, aiid numbering altogether SSO persons. She then for the Ahnadyr river, near the Behring Straits. • [there the‘boats were put out, and all hands, except the refrigerating staff, wore told ofi for fishing. Nets were laid, down at the 'mouths;:of creeks and" inlets,.-.- which.: are. the ■ spawning ground' of imuimerable salmon, and as the-iUh came; in ;with tho tide they were caught by ... thousands. . The boats weid utilised as lisn carriers to the ship, where the salmon were salted or put in the refrigerators. After some mouths the Rangatira weighed anchor and proceeded to the Amur, where the fishermen met witii equal success. . The results of oiie day’s haul totalled 30,000 salmon. The venture has been apparently a success; for the ship returned to? Vladivostock, after 'about five months’ work, -with 200,000 salmon in the refrigerators, and, it is reported, more than double that, number salted down. This success may account for the new law which :was passed in Russia on - October Ist last, to the effect .that.no ship is to’be'allowed to fish nofth of.
