Unless rain is experienced within the next few weeks there will ho a serious drought in the South Canterbury and North Otago districts, so the writer is informed by a Southern settler visiting this island. ■ The. Napier wool sale is rapidly increasing in importance. Many of the big clips of tbe district are now marketed locally. The wool stores are now, like those of Wellington, inadequate, and more .accommodation will have to be provided. According to a private communication the meat trade ■ conference being arranged by the Canterbury A. and P. Association will be held at Christchurch instead of in Wellington. It will take place at the end of this month. The wool repent published under the heading of the .United .Formers’ Cooperative Association was the combined report of this firm and of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Some fine crops axe to he seen in Hawke’s Bay this season, particularly of Algerian oats. The root crops are also good as well as rape. Dry weather is required, however, to harden up the feed. There will not be the same number of lambs off the mother this season as is usual. Mlost of the turnip crops here (says the Auxoa correspondent of the “Hawera Star”) are good; there .are a ' few that have been attacked by the liy. There is not near the quantity of | maize grown this year as has been in i past seasons. Some of the settlers considered it is not remunerative enough for the extra work it involves. Messrs Dalgety and Company effected some good sales at Monday’s wool auction. For Morton Bros., of Hunterville, they secured 12id for a very light-conditioned lambs’ wool, the highest price for lambs’ wool. It was taken for the Continent. The clip of D. Marshall, of Marlborough, also realised splendid values. Fbf a super- r fine halfbred ewe wool 13|d, the top price of the sale, was made; and tho three-quarter-brod sold at Is.
