Penguin disaster are coming in freely to the "New Zealand Times" office. Tho public is recognising that this is mi occasion that call* for the pinclitnl sympathy of all. There aro .many ilistres-ing fates to he relieved, for Iho breadwinners have been suddenly swept away, and widow* and children are calling for assistance. On behalf of these we appeal to those who can spare any contributions, which, it is scarcely necessary to point out, will be given in a very deserving online. The subscriptions winch have so far been received are:— PREVIOUSLY ACKNOWLEDGED.
A WILLIAMSON MATINEE. PIEIWrORMANCE ON SATURDAY. Mr J. C. Williamson cabled yesterday from Melbourne to his representative in New Zealand directing that a matinee performance of "Tile Red Mill" should be given nt the Opera, Ifouw in Wellington on Saturday in aid of the Penguin relief fund. The whole of the receipts, without deduction of any kind, are direoted by Mr Williamson to be banded over to the Mayor for the relief of sufferers by the recent great disaster. Tho fttep to bo taken by Mr Williamson is a particularly generous one. and should result in a considerable) sum being realised. By attending Iffe performance the public will, besides deriving pleasure from a particularly amusing and ivellGtnjjed production, have the satisfaction of knowing that tho price they pay for admission will go to swell a fund that calls for the contribution of every citizen. Tho Wellington Professional Orchestra will give a benefit concert at tho Town Hall next Sunday night in aid of the survivors. Through the kind permission of Mr .T. C. Williamson, items will be rendered by members of the Red Mill Comic Opera Company, nt present in Wellington.
