HOEOWIIENUA HACK RACING CLUB. The Horoivlicnua Hack Eaoing Club was .unfortunate in striking bad weather for the opening day of its spring meeting. Eaiu fell in torrents throughout the previous night, and in consequence the course was - heavy. This caused the withdrawal of many horses brought to the meeting, including All lied and Gold Crest. They would have carried a lot of money. Late in the afternoon the weather cleared, but set in again before the last race was run, and continued steadily for-some hours. The gate receipts amounted to a record. Hi is was very satisfactory, and no doubt duo to the fact that excursion Jares were issued from Palmerston and Wellington. The totalisator investments amounted to over. .£SOOO for seven, events. This is more than was handled both : days last year ■ in sixteen races. ■ The nominations and' acceptances also showed a corresponding ' increase, and the club has no doubt acted wisely in shifting the meeting from the autumn to the spring. The Porirua and Pordell stables have always liberally patronised Horowhenua meetings, and on the opening day of the recent meeting the representatives of the stables named ran prominently. The Cup brought out a field of eleven, and half way down the straight half a dozen horses were fighting out a punishing finish. Tho Conqueror colt William, looking bigger and brighter than at any other time during his career, iput up slbs overweight to secure G. Price’s services. He ran a good, honest race, and was perhaps a trifle unlucky .not to score. William was first favourite and, Hiro tho biggest outsider, only £2O of the £BOB being on his chance. He carried 21bs overweight, and was well handled by B. Murfitt. Hiro is one of P. Coffey’s Trentham team and races in the colours of the Wellington sportsman who adopts tho hbm de course of “A lastirk.” He ran a good race in the principal event at the Marlborough meetI ing last autumn. His only success last ; season was in a mile race at Tauhoreni- | kau at Easter time. He did not score out of his turn, but was allowed to pay a false price. He was bred at the Cami bria Park stud, and is by, the St. Simon ! horse Cyrenian, from Epine, by Sweet : William, from The Thorn, by The Barb. Mataari ran one of his best races. Eosegrove, Montigo, and Moata were well ; up at tho business end. Tho Lark made

bis reappearance* in the race. He looked well and ran a fair race considering the track. Tho sprint event introduced Mahuta, who was installed favourite, and he put up a creditable performance although defeated. He had evidently done a fair amount of work. The Soulii Islander, Toney (Cajolery—Pigeontoe), who hold a good record in half milo races, made his first appearance in the race. As tho barrier went up ho jumped round and was not persevered with. At the end St. Claimer won nicely. Tho St. Clemente gelding was seen out at Trentham and Marton, and had a pull aver h is) opponents in condition. C. Pritchard, the Hutt trainer, led in two winners, both ridden by L. Wilson. Saga's running at Marton tho previous week installed her favourite for the Hack Flying, and she won with a good deal to spare from Clem. More money was invested on tho Electric Hack Handicap (a half milo flutter) than .any other roce. Pixie, a member of A. Atwood's Feilding team, was made a good favourite, and Sir Frisco (San Francisco —Waitemata) received niore support than any of the others. Tho latter is trained by F. Tilley, and is full sister to Frisco Maid, who was in work at tho Hutt as a two-year-old. The race was rim in a downpour, and the field was strung out in Indian file at the end of a furlong. Naumai, a gelding by Conqueror, scored for tho Mauakau sport who races aa Wire. Peweno. The maidens were a very ordinary lot with the exception of Banyan, a wellgrown and good-looking chestnut colt by Pilgrim's Progress—Neva, by Stepniak— Whirlpool, by St. George. It was his first appearance, and ho won easily. The Welter Hack Handicap field included Glengowrie, full brother to Lass o’Gowrie, a stable mate of Bunyau. Mr Laing came over from' Woodviilo to see the colt run. Ho ran respectably, but would have been better suited by a shorter distance. The finish was between tho. two weights, Gauze and Truthful, tho former having slightly the best of it. Mr Prosser also led in the winner of tho Hurdles, Playmate, who always had a bit tho best of it. Compass lost several lengths at each fence. H© only beat No Snot by the narrowest of margins for second place. It was a close finish, and the backers of tho latter thought ho got up. Tho concluding day of tho meeting was spoilt by tho weather. Tauhera put up a decent race with Bunyan (a promising colt) in the Oh an Flying. Tauhera was saddled up again for the Hack Scurry (a half mile flutter). Naumai (also by Conqueror) was better backed, but Tauhera won with a little bit to spare. The owner of Tauhera was asked to put a price on the Conqueror gelding and named 500 guineas. The horse did not change hands. Four of the six runners for the Moutero Hack Handicap were well fancied, William being a strong favourite. Ho ran a good race in the mud, but found Rendrock (Explosion—Stepfast) too good. Playmate, thd first day's winner, was neglected in the Hurdles. backeUs going for Aotea and St. Amelia. The latter ran in the rear during the first round. After shaking off Gold Guard and Aotea, Playmate went on and won fairly easily from St. Amelia. Playmate is about the first of the Stqpniak's to win over fences. He has been very successful on the Horowhenua track. C. Jenkins scored in the Hack Welter on the first day on Gauze and won on Lady Disdain (also by The Officer) on the second day. The latter scored her first win, and was.the best backed of the four runnei*s. Mahuta had all his work cut out to stall off Mataari in the Weraroa Handicap. MASTERTON RACING CLUB.' The programme of th© spring meeting of the Masterton Racing Chib., to be held on October 21th and 25th, appears in this issue. Tho stakes offered for the different events are on a liberal scale. The open events are the Masterton Cup, of 175 sovs, one mile and a quarter, and Publicans' Handicap, of 120 sovs, seven furlongs, on the first day, and the President's Handicap, of 120 sovs, one mile and a furlong, and Stewards' Handicap (open), of 100 sovs, six furlongs. Nominations for all events, except tho Maiden Hack Race, close on October 4th, with Mr A. Hathaway (secretary).

DANNEVIREE JOCKEY CLUB. The annual meeting of the above club was held on th© 16th ult., when the report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted, after which the meeting lapsed on account of the nomination papers being handed to the secretary one day late. A proposition was then made, seconded and carried, that a special general meeting be called for the 6th September, for the election of officers and general, when there were fortyfour members present. The following were elected:—President, Mr Geo. Hunter (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs Gordon Lloyd (re-elected) and R. N. Blackiston (re-elected); treasurer, Mr Chas. Bnddeley (re-elected).. Messrs Neagle, Rathbone, and McDermott were elected on the committee in place of Messrs Devonshire, Neaglo, and Ingley, who retired from effluxion of time, and one native member, Hare Pine, in place of Hoera Rangi, retired., A proposition was' carried that at future general meetings members be allowed to vote by ! post, and another to tho effect that a printed list of members accompany tho annual report and balance-sheet.

CHATTER, Mr J. R. Whyte, president of the Foxton Racing Club, was among the visitors at the Horowhenua meeting. Mr Whyte for many years acted as secretary of tho West Coast Club with credit, and' his election to the important position of president will be popular with th© members of tho club and -the public. Winners at Horowhenua have incurred tho following penalties at Rangitikei: Flying Handicap, St.’ Claimer (lOibs) 9.5, Mahuta (71bs) 9.3; Rangitoto Hack Race, Rendrock (7lbs) 9.7, Hiro (71bs) 8.7, .Lady Disdain (7lbs) 7.5, The Wanganui Jockey Club will have charge of the totalisator arrangements at the forthcoming meeting. The club will accept totalisator investments up till 11 o'clock on each day of the races. At Canterbury Park meeting on August 31st, the Park Stakes, six furlongs, was won by Maori Girl (Stepniak—Lady's Maid). She was bred by Mr J. B. Reid, of Elderslie, and was disposed of at Sydney as a yearling for 80 guineas. Lass o* Gowrio's name appears among the acceptors for the Rangitikei meeting. Her full brother (Glengowrie) created a favourable impression at Marton, as also did two other members of F. Tilley's Fordell team in Bunyan and Sir Frisco (San Francisco—Waitemata). The latter was unlucky at the start of the only race he contested. Mr A. F. Douglas's horses, Merriwai and Needlework, were shipped to Sydney yesterday to compete in the jumping ©vents at Randwick and Flemington. J. Cameron had charge of the horses. They will be ridden by John O'Connell. Dulcinea, Playmate, and Leeside were double .hurdle winners at the Marton, Horowhenua, and Ashburton meetings. At the Kalgoorlie meeting on August •31st, Prophecy won th© Spring Stakes, of 300 sovs, weight for age, on© mile and a quarter. She carried 8.9, a stone more than her Caulfield Oup weight, and won easily in 2min lOJsec. Two Cup candidates (Saga and Mahuta) were successful at th© Horowhenua meeting, but neither has incurred a penalty.
