PROFESSOR RUTHERFORD
Tho “Montreal Gazette,” in the course of a eulogistic appreciation of Professor Rutherford, tho ox-Row Zealander, who recently resigned his chair at the McGill University in that city, Paid: —i“\Vith the departure of Dr Rutherford, McGill will lose tho man •.vho, more than any other of a scientific staff always of a high order, has won fame and honor for the university throughout tho world. Indeed Dr Rutherford is to-day ranked among half a dozen modern masters of physics. (He was already well-known when in 1903 ho advanced in the Philosophical _ Magazine tho new theory of radio activity, based upon his research work into tho properties of thorium. Two years later bis complete development of the theory was published in the Bnkerian lecture delivered before tho Royal Society, and Dr Rutherford's brilliant work was rewarded bv Dio award of tho Bumford medal, the blue ribbon of tho British scientific world. In tho past five years ho has had many offers of chairs in universities both on this Continent and in Groat Britain, and while there is now general regret at his approaching departure, there is also a feeling of thankfulness that McGill has been ablo to keep him so long.
