LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr T. W. McDonald), Councillors Ward, O’Sullivan, Baldwin! Poes, Clarke, and Clere. ‘Permission was granted to the Thorndon Cycle Club to run a road race on the 20th inst. on the usual conditions being observed. . The Wellington Labourers’ Union for»warded copy of claims for rate of wages ''and conditions "'of employment which it /desires to bring‘into effect throughout j the district, and suggested tho holding of •a conference thereon. The' Mayor remarked that they must either 'attend the conference or give in to the men’s demands. Councillor Ward: . I’ll represent this Council at the conference and tell them what'l think of the.wholg thing. Councillor Ward was thereupon ap : pointed to attend tho conference on behalf of the Council. Accounts totalling £1471 9s 9d were passed for payment. It was decided to apply to the Railway Department for a crossing to the Fitzhorberfc estate. • In connection with the coming raupicipal the principle of having a polling-booth in Wellington was approved. Tho Mayor eaid he thought this should be extended as re. garde the payment of rates- An arrangement should be com© to with the Hutt Countv Council whereby town ratepayers could pay in their 'rates there instead of having to come out to tho iiu it. On the recommendation of the Fire Brigades Committee it was decided to purchase a fire-bell, and to obtain particulars with tho view of erecting an observation tower.
