TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS
Tho appointment of Mr Donald Robertson to succeed tho late Mr William Gray as Secretary for Post and Telegraphs, and of Mr R. W. Holmes, M. Inst. C.E., xo succeed tho Into Mr P. S. Hay as Enginoer-in-Chicf for tho colony, will, no doubt, be received in this community and throughout the colony with approval. Both men have given ample evidence of possessing, each in his department, tho ability, knowledge, and training necessary to discharging tho important duties of tho positions they have been called to fill. Mr Robertson s career in tho public service lias been a steady progress from one stepping-stono to another until ho has become tho chief of his department, next to tho Minister. Mr Robertson's excellent and interesting little work on tho “Early History of tho Now Zealand Post Office” further shows that his interest in his profession docs not confine itself to tho mere discharge of departmental routine. It is a contribution of undoubted value to tho literature of early New Zealand history. Liko -Mr Robertson, Mr Holmes lias very amply earned tho honourable position now conferred upon him. His distinguished engineering services in various parts of the colony point him out as tho proper man for tho post to which ho has been appointed. • His name-, however, is more particularly associated with various railway works iin tho North Island. It may bo said, indeed, that there is little in tho way of railway operations in this island, from tho Manawatu railway to tho Main Trunk line, in which Mr Holmes has not had some honourable share. There is no, doubt that ho will make an admirable chief of his department. Wo congratulate Mr Robertson, Mr Holmes, and tho colony on their appointment.
