KAPITI ISLAND
A large and representative meeting wa* held in the sohoohuom, Te Horo, on. Friday night to protest against tho action of the Government in deciding to establish a leper Ration on. Kapiti Island, Tho following resolution was carried unanimously;—“That this meeting of Tq Horo residents desires to express its die* pleasure at the action of the Government deciding to establish a leper station on* Kapiti Island, on the following grounds, viz.:—That considerable compensation has already been paid by the Govonlment fot’ the island. That the utn*ernmeni; has not yet acquired the whole of the,island, and a great injustice would be done to the balance of tho owners. . That a splendid fishing ground exists, and is used by the fishermen of this district for Wellington supply. That it is likely to be considerably need by tourists on account of i(<s historical associations and scenery. Also, that such a considerable area should not be devoted to tho above purpose, comsidorlng that there are numerous omaUer islands on the Kcvr Zealand coast. That the portion of tho island already acquired by the Govern* meat was for a specific purpose, and the establishment of a leper station would bo a breach of faith/' Tho following delegates were a pointed to act with the various others throughout the district, to interview the Minister on. the above matter —Messrs P. A. Gilliee, G. A,. Dixon. A. Mounticr. J. It. Mackintosh, G. Tuliy, J. A. Muir.
