OUR FISHERIES

AN EXHAUSTIVE EXPERIMENT. PBES3 ASSOCIATION. * DUNK.DIN, April 5. On tho Estimates last year appeared a veto for £‘iooo for trawling expenmenta. Under that authority the Minister of Marino has arranged to charter for three months tho Napier Trawling Company’s Nora Niven, now on her way out to tho colony, with a crew of ten export Grimsby trawlers. Tho charter is to begin immediately on the vessel’s arrival, early next month, or for such montlis as it may bo determined as best suited to carry out Urn experiment. Mr Millar states that tho idea is to take tho vessel to places wliero no trawling has been done hitherto, and it is hoped that the- results will prove that fish is plentiful and can he supplied to tho public at cheap rates. To ensure tho experiment being thorough, Mr Ayson, Inspector in tho Fisheries Department, will be placed in charge. Tho Nora Niven will probably begin her operations at Stewart Island and go right up to tho Chathams, thence to Lyttelton in a direct line, so that all fishing beds off tho Now Zealand coast will bo tested. The results of each haul will ho noteeb and tho information thus obtained will in all likelihood bo embodied in a comprehensive report for tho benefit of the public.
