CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL.
HANDSOME GIFT TO THE FUND. An announcement was made by the Rev Father Hickson on the subject of tho now Roman Catholic Cathedral for AVollington at tho Boulcott street Church yesterday. In bringing the. matter onco more before Te Aro parishioners, lie stated that Air Alartin Kennedy bad made a gift to the Cathedral fund of a section of land having a frontage of 00ft to Buckle street by a depth of two chains, occupying part of tho proposed site for the Cathedral. Tho land in question is at present occupied by three small cottages, which aro bringing in an annual rental of nearly £ioU.
In a subsequent conversation with a “Times” reporter the Rev Father Hickson, who is special missionin' for tho Cathedral fund in tho Wellington diocese, stated that the -sum now in hand amounted to £IO,OOO, the whole of which was invested, and was earning interest at the rate of 5 per cent. Asked as to when it was proposed to commence erection, ho stated, unofficially, that a start would bo made when the money in hand amounted to two-thirds of tho cost of the first part of the Cathedral to be erected. This sura would bo something like £-10,000. This gives an idea of tlio magnificent scale on which tho Cathedral is to he built. It will occupy tho site part of which is at present occupied by tlio Buckle street Church, but the grounds will take in all those properties between the Buckle street Church and Tory street, and those in Tory street between Buckle street and St. Patrick’s College grounds. Tho trustees of tho fund have an option of purchase for some thirty years to come over all the properties in the block at nominal cost.
