Phoenix started badly, losing seven wickets for 14. when Barns (29 not out) and Andy Houston (29) oa.mo to the rescue, the total reached being 78. The team, hatted one short. Hunt holing absent. Houston gamely (and successfully) came to his team’s assistance at a very critical juncture. Alpo, Miller (who Led off with four maidens and three wickets) and Tom Turner bowled! splendidly for Newtown, whoso score at drawing of stumps stood at 96 for six wickets —-Merrick 21, Gum brill 17, Fred Alps 24 (not out), and Turner 11 (not out), being the “doubles.” Tho three left-handers, who did well in tho previous match, never scored a run between thorn! Houston’s hatting figures for this season are now 270 runs for 11 innings—a fine average. The Newtown v. Fred Alpo 52 and ■Merrick 28 added 84 for tiio eighth wicket and made a bid for victory that was the theme of general admiration. Tho Newtown eleven, which has had to struggle along UW3 season without several of its last- year’s “guns,” is to be complimented on the great improvement made duitng tho season. Tho Gas Company commenced their fixture with Old Boys on No. 4.. They batted first and compiled 141. Topp 43, was tho principal contributor to the score, though his runs were made more carefully than usual. Harris, net out, 10, wos tho next top contributor. _ At call of time Old Boys had lost eight wickets for CB, Macintosh being top scorer with 13, which included several nice on strokes.

The bout bowling for Old Boys was done by Macintosh (four for 13) and Ololand (throe for 33). Girdlcstono bowled steadily but failed to got a wicket. Laws and Burke opened the Gas Company’s attack; the former proved effective but Burke was eventually displaced by Lingard, who captured throe good wickets for few runs.

Despite tho good wkickot on the College ground, the scoring was low all round, jMidlaml hatted first amd made 85, Fred Rlimmer being the top scorer with 18. College replied with 92, H. Monaghan playing a lino innings for 35. Ho received most assistance from Trolovo (14) who has been promoted from tho College B team. Midland in their second innings have lost three wickets for s(>, "Wightton being top-scorer with 14. W. Robinson (seven for 33) bowled really well for Midland, as did Trolovo (three for 12) and Mason (three for 18) for college'. •

Pearce, with 25, was the only ctoublo figure scorer for Wellington second, who found tho Johusonville bowing class enough to retiro them for 57. Hoken bowled splendidly, capturing six wickets at tho small cost of four \ runs apiece, and ho received good support from F. Mooro who got three for 5. Loose bowling and fielding by the. Wellingtons allowed their opponents to- put on 143, towards which tho chief contributors were A'liok Moore 33, Gcargo 30 and Windly 25. The best bowling Was done by Luokio (four for 39). Niven (three for 43) and Nash (two for 16). Wellington have lost one wickets for 13 in thedr second innings, Cook being not out, 10. Waiwetu had a diay out at the expanse of Wadestown. Tho latter were got add of cheaply' for CO. Pringl© and Judd dicing tho bowling. Waiwetu batted for the rest of the afternoon, scoring 191 for one wicket: Fred Judd is 84 not out and McGnrk 87 not out.
